My mom is considering getting me a single Guinea Pig for Christmas (finally!) and she wants to know what kind of things I will need in the cage including the size of the cage. Don't waste your money on a store bought cage.
You should get 2 guinea pigs, they are herd animals and get lonely and frightened when they are alone.

Owner to 3 male guinea pigs
well you can make a cage or a 55 gallon fish tank will work fine and basically all you need is a nice place for him/her to eat and bed down woodshavings or gerbil bedding is perfect and a nice wooden box for a home...

I just purchased a new guinea pig,,cage that is 44" long and i think that is a must, my Myia loves to run in it and uses ever inch. I bought pellets, alfalfa hay, hay ball, water bottle and carefresh bedding and it all came to $150.00. I also bought her her own towel rather than use an old one i had as she is such a nice color i wanted to show off her color.
You need to give it about 1/2 to 1 cup of dark green leafy veggies every day.
Fruit is given only every 3 days.
You will need to clean its potty spot every day or two but the entire cage every 5 to 6 days if you use wood chips, with carefresh you can let it go longer as it is so absorbent. I prefer the carefresh my granddaughter prefers the wood chips as she likes the smell of the wood and carefreah has a rather strong odor.
A guinea pig needs at least 2 hours of one on one time with you a day but that is very easy as you just do your day with your guinea pig. Lie it on your chest while watching TV, listening to music as guinea pigs love music, or reading a book. Set it in your lap while you are on the computer, my Miya loves the sound of the key board and purrs to it.!! With in 2 weeks or less your guinea pig will have bonded to you as you are its companion.
You want to get a female as the males have soooo many problems with the muscles that control their anus. They will start to get huge impactions, they can be as big as a ping pong ball. you will have to help him poo from the time this starts and it is a stinky process.
