I have a white and black female fancy rat. She is at least 2 years old. (I adopted her and I don't know her exact age.) At first I thought it was because of too high of protein levels (she had gotten into a sample packet of dog food and eaten most of it one day) But recently I've been trying to get a better look at her skin to see what it could be.
I saw a little yellow buggy running around. I don't see any white specks at the base of her fur and she has some pencil point sized scab looking points on her.

(sorry its a bad picture)
Also, which is the most effective method of getting rid of them?
Will Neem shampoo work?
Thanks :D

Take her to a vet, they will take a sample of the bug and give you an appropriate remedy.
For now, give her a good scrubbing with Dawn dish soap, as its super safe for animals. Get a flea comb from Petco and brush her down afterwards to take care of any eggs and dry her.
Plug up the sink before you bather her and save one or two of the drowned bugs in either a plastic zip-top baggie or in a sealable container (in case it isnt really dead) and bring her and the bugs to the vet.
If she ate a whole sample pack of food, the bugs are really sapping her energy and you want them off of her ASAP!
Best of luck to you and your new baby!!!
