My new Rat is making some weird Clicking nose sounds like a keyboard key getting hit down and i am worried about his please if you know any thing about this please leave a answer Thank you
Hi Stetsen,
How new is your rattie? Although I have had rats in the past I don;t remember any of mine making clicking noises, but that doesn't mean they don't make them! :)
If I may suggest that you take a look at your rats teeth. Perhaps they are a bit overgrown and your rat is grinding them. Another possibility would be that his teeth may have grown slightly too long and perhaps they could be peircing the inside of his mouth. Often times the bottom teeth grow upwards into the roof of their mouths and/or the top teeth grow downward then curve around and interfere with their eating, drinking, and grooming.
I'd like to know what you discover about your ratties clicking. This could be something new I haven't learned about....:)
Enjoy your new rattie!

That's interesting. I will have to look that up too. Good job!
I hope that is all it is with his rattie....:)

Sadly that is so true. I purchased my rats from pet stores and after a few weeks they all showed signs of upper resperatory infections. It's too bad they don't do anything to hgelp prevent that from happening. All mine were treated and lived long happy lives. None lived less than 3 years and one lived to the age of five...:)

Yes it sounds like breathing problems related to an upper respiratory infection. Quite common among critters from pet stores, and also it can be brought on by the stress of moving into a new environment. For small animals stress can bring illness. Please do contact the person you got the rat from so they can get their other rats examined and treated before they are sold. Just incase they have ill rats. Most vets see rats and small animals so you should be able to locate a nice vet near you, best wishes.
If he seems to have difficulty breathing and has a red residue around his nose (called pyrothrin) then he has a respiratory infection. He needs to be seen by a vet ASAP and get antibiotics. He'll be on these the rest of his life. More than likely he'll be given doxycycline and baytril. If he was not called a fancy rat or dumbo rat, more than likely he was being sold as a feeder rat..ie snake food. This rats over seriously inbred and are prone to all kinds of health issues. Tests have shown that these rats are 99% genetically the same. If you didn't want to take him to the vet, the store you got him from may have a return policy, and you could return him or possibly exchange him. Just call and ask.
I've kept pet rats and have worked at two pet stores
almost all rats from petco and similar places have upper respiratory disease. its extremely contagious and very common in rats. You can either
A) bring it back, but don't buy another because I guarantee if one has it they all do
B) bring it to the vet and have it treated. It should cost around 100 dollars for a visit and medication and he will be fine in a week and a half. the pet store will most likely not refund your vet bills because they breed them for food, not pets.
Its the sad truth :[
I guess it could be bruxing too, bruxing is when a rat sniffs in and out, clicks their teeth, then bulges their eyes. this is their special way of "purring" like a cat would. You can look up bruxing rat on youtube to make sure its not that, if it is, your fine.

Thats odd :S
I would suggest taking him to the pet shop you purchased him from & asking them. If he's sick, they'll give you a refund or exchange him. If you really like this rat then take him to a vet. I remember my hamster Stripes was making these noises, & 3 days later she died. It was heart breaking. I would act fast & get help for your rat because it could be a sickness.

Tess is right. This is a classic sign or respiratory problems. He'll need to see a vet and they'll probably give him some baytril. It's relatively cheap as long as you catch it soon.
Good luck. I'm sorry your rat is ill. Email me if you need more help. I'll always reply.

Rat owner for 8 years now.
He could have respiratory problems, I'd take him to a vet. I'd also go and complain to the pet store that sold him to you and tell them that they need to take better care of their animals.
