Ok my 4 year old quarterhorse mare went to a trainer for 2 months she works well under saddle and on the ground now with only the occasional freak out. She seems kinda bored with what we're doing, (walking, trotting, a little bit of loping) I've been riding her around a corral and a little bit in the pasture, when we're in the pasture she seems to get more interested but at the same time would prefer to run around. Should I let her lope around in the pasture more (I'm kinda scared about goffer holes), should I take her down a trail (according to my trainer she doesn't spook easily but I not reallly comfortable testing her but she should be ok) or should I just do different exercises when in the corral (examples would be great).
I also could do with some examples of excercises I could do with her on the ground.
I've had her back for about a month and have been riding her pretty consistently, and seems lazy when she normally loves to run.
Thanx ahead of time, I really hope you can understand the question.

My 4 y.o. breedingstock paint is the same way sometimes. What I do is take him into the pasture and sometimes on the trails. He is really good though, to lope her around the pasture, I would check for holes and if there are any you can fill them up and maybe letting her run around will calm her down. I hope this helps!
Cubbie my green Paint.
First don't do it if you don't feel comfortable with the idea of being alone on a trail with her. As for exercises try circles, figure 8s at the walk and trot and big figure 8s at the lope with a simple change at the x. Serpentine are also good for young horses. Ground stuff showmanship is always good, and try a trail in hand stuff to help de-spook her. Then later you can try trail on her and see how she does. My favorite exercise book is the 101 things to do in the arena. It will have many more examples and try reading some training book for exercises too.
Good Luck!

Horses get bored doing the same thing over and over. When you ride her don't just do the typical against the wall riding. Change it up and do different patterns, circles, etc. It will keep her thinking so she won't be so bored. Have you done a join-up with her yet? If you do that, she'll be more willing to listen to you instead of just wanting to run out in the pasture. But I wouldn't recommend taking her down a trail until you have enough confidence in yourself to be able to control her on a trail. If you have access to a more seasoned trail horse you should try ponying her down a trail that way she has another horse to go with and she'll get a better idea of what to do.
