Long of the short is:
Foals nurse on their mothers till about 4-6 months of age. During which time they start eating hay, grain and start drinking water. From that point on, they eat grain, hay, supplements, any feed through medications or fly control. Depending age, some horses start on senior feeds in their mid teens or into their 20's. All depends on their teeth condition and digestive tract. Some need the senior feed earlier in life while others never need it and remain on regular gran & hay.
Hope this answers your question better

16 years breeding, riding, training and showing AQHA's and APHA's
foals birth - 6months (approx) mothers milk
6months - 3 years (approx) stud or yongstock mix/nuts
3 years - 15 years (aprox) cool mix/nuts (light to medium workload) performance mix, race mix, or variations there of depending on the type of work
15 years plus - veteran/senior feed
also, forage in the form of grass, hay (dried grass with 20% or less in moisture content) haylage (usually 40-50% moisture content)
horses can also have sugar beet (for weight gain), oil (for coat condition), supplements and minerals added to their feed, often garlic to help boost the immune sytem, and sometimes salt to encourage them to drink more.
orphaned foals canbe bottle fed, although this usually only happens in the first few months, and then they go on to a special foal feed with a milk suplement.
i hope this helped.
