Your experience with a freshly gelded horse?

Your experience with a freshly gelded horse?
My colt was just gelded this morning. The vet gave me a list of things to look for, swelling, bleeding etc etc... I was wondering if you had any advice for keeping him healthy and making sure he heals okay. If you've had any bad experiences, I'd like to know about that too. I just don't know what to expect, I've only had mares in the past!
dont worry too much honey.... there will be a bit of blood dripping for a few days...nothing to worry about unless its a stream!!....keep him in for first night on very clean bedding but then best to turn him out in paddock...better if he can move about helps with swelling etc....it will swell a little.................also use fly cream to make sure no flies get on wound........dont use spray as it could sting!!!...........i had both my youngsters done last year....no problems with either of them.....good luck!!!

I have never had a bad experience. You just need to make sure the wound is draining and isn't closed and swelling. The best thing you can do is to lunge him everyday or take him on a good walk getting him to trot. Or just chase him around the pasture. The movement keeps the wound open and will open it up if it has closed. You should do this for five days.
don't turn him out with strange horses and with any other horses that might make him run and jump and play. However, he should be excercised. If you can't find a quiet field to turn him out to graze in then hand walk him several times a day. The walking will keep him from swelling too much and from being too sore.
Just keep it clean, fly free & keep him exercising! It has to be done, he will not want to but you have to. The cold water will help. Expect him not to want to move much. Some blood dripping. Just keep it clean. Good luck!

I've had three gelded between the ages of 6 months and a year or so, and had no problems with any of them. One of them swelled up more than the others, but it still didn't cause any problems.
Make sure he gets plenty of exercise. Even if he does not feel like it. It will keep down the swelling.
