I have a horse that im getting involved with in 4H and such, please answer the following to the best of the abilities?
1. How can i keep my horse clean? I have to get him loaded and leaving by 8. I don't have a stall available at the time to keep him in, so should i get up and hour early to bathe him even though it might be chilly??
2. I am using an 18 yr old Standardbred x racehorse that im putting in ametuer barrel racing ( we won't be going very fast), someone told me that he's to old and that his bones will break really easy because of his racing days... is that true? Should i be worried??
3.For showmanship i have a black leather, silver plated (but ingraved with gold) halter that i bought, what color lead rope can i use, and does it have to be a chain? Other wise i have nylon leadropes?
4.How can i get my horses tail untangled?? It doesn't have major knots but its somewhat hard to go through with a comb? Is they're detangler for horses?
5.I'm going to a schooling show this weekend what are some things i need to know. Any tips? (its on western pleasure, trail class, showmanship and horsemenship?)
Thanks i'll probably end up posting more later!

Woot! I used to do 4-h so if this is for 4-h I can answer a few questions. I was a showmanship champ, too. XP
1. As far as keeping him clean, the options of bathing and blanketing work very well. If you're worried about it being really cold, you can bathe him the night before, blanket him and then just do touch-ups in the morning. One thing I used to do for early mornings with a horse that HATED bathing (and was so stuck in his ways he never did get over it...) was used some simple no water soap sprays. They have bottles that are "no water" sprays that clean the horse. Take a towel and towel him down. Make sure he's clipped up nice :)
2. You'll be FINE. I rode my 28 year old (he lived to be 38!) in barrels and poles, we weren't FAST, but we did what we could :)
3. You don't need to have a chain for 4-h, in fact, I wouldn't reccommend it. We commonly would have just normal halters, nothing fancy, though I was given a gorgeous brown with silver on it, and I just used a normal brown lead. Don't worry about getting a chain, I never did use one...
4. Detanglers. Human detanglers work fine, also: show sheen was my SAVIOR back when I was in 4-h, just DON'T put it where the saddle is going to go or you'll have an awefully slick horse. XP
5. Showmanship = make sure you have your lead in a figure 8, never wrapped around your hand. Keep your chin up and smile the entire time in all competitions. Remember to move when the judge moves. This means if the judge is to the left of your horse, you should be standing by their right, etc. Remember to square your horse up at all times and smile, look attentive, and keep an eye on both your horse and the judge. [these are all 4-h tips], for western pleasure, make sure to smile, keep your hand low, keep your other hand on your leg and act relaxed. Try not to flop, etc. Don't switch hands partway through, unless it's secretly behind the judges back XP. I've pulled that trick back when I was little. Trail class = take it slow, if your horse spooks, work your best to get him over it. Practice before, they always gave us the opportunity to have the gate and bridge nearby. Take it gentle with them and try to work that out.
Good luck! :D

4-h'er for a decent chunk of time; now, dressage, jumping, reining. (11 years of riding -- since age 7)
Well I don't know about the other ones, but I do know no. 4. drench it in water and then put in conditioner. then rinse it and after about 2 minutes, try combing it out. Sorry that I couldn't answer the other ones. ;(
Good luck at the show!
Good luck at the show!
Me myself and I
1. Bathe him the day before. When he dries, put a sheet on him over night. Get up a little earlier the next morning, take the sheet off, and groom him. you migh have to hose his legs and feet off but that's no big deal.
2. It all depends on the health of the horse. If he's healthy and sound, he should have no problem. I wouldn't worry about it. running barrel here and there isn't gonna hurt him unless he's lame or something..
3. I think it would be best to use a black leather lead with a gold chain so it matches his halter.
4. Wash his tail, then let it dry. (Don't brush it while it's wet..it's even harder to untangle!). once it's dry (or still a little damp), spray Show Sheen on it and let it dry. Then comb through it. it might take a little while depending on how tangled it is but Show Sheen is AWESOME! I love it!
5. Try your best and don't expect to win. then if you don't win, you won't be as disapointed. and you'll be surprised if you do! just stay calm and stay focused..
good luck!

1. try using a blanket to keep his body clean and a sleazy to keep his head and neck clean.
2. No he isnt to old, the horse I use in 4-H for barrels and games is 29 and a retired polo horse so yeah he likes to run.
3. The lead should be black leather with a chain like the halter.
4. Wash his tail with conditioner and then once its washed out you can normally comb through easier.
5. Just have fun :).

1: i dont have a stall either and the easiest way i have found to keep a horse clean is groom every day, and i use show sheen all year long, it repels dirt and dust really great.
2:he isnt too old, never judge a horse because of their age, give him joint supplements and if he is WILLING, then hes probaly fine, have a vet check him first just in case.
3: it doesnt have to have a chain, i would use black.
4: use vetrolin, i use it and i get it from tractor supply its about $8 for a bottle and it lasts my two horses about 6 months, i use it once a week, it keeps out the tangles, makes their mane and tail shiny and soft and it only takes about the size of a quarter for the entire tail and the size of a dime for the mane.
5: not sure, i only show for fun.

1- put a blanket on him to keep the dirt off of his body and a sleazy hood on him to keep it off of his head/neck. It might be better to wash him that day but a blanket and a sleazy overnight should work fine. If he's white, put chalk on the white bits to make them look perfect.
2- No, not true at all. Many horses compete actively into their 20's.
3- Use a black leather lead rope with a chain. I believe you do need a chain for showmanship.
4- There is detangler for horses but it's a rip off- way too expensive! I use human detangler or "no more tangles" which is a children's detangler. You can also use Cowboy Magic if it's REALLY tangled, I love that stuff for a stubborn knot. Cowboy magic is a horse detangler but it's $10 for a tiny bottle.
5- Just stay calm and make sure your horse stays clean! Remember to keep your eyes up and look pleasant.

=) YOU WILL UNDERSTAND
1. yes, get up andbathe him.. And it has to be moderately hot water. Have a good sized towel to keep his washed parts warm/' get a blanket of your own and throw it over him after you washed that part.
2. it all depends on wether he is in good shape, it's up to you to know if your horse is in a good state to run it. lunge im full on the speed you want to go and stop him fast so see how he handles it in the round pen.
3. a fully chain dog's leash will do. ive used it. anything suilver/black/gold as long as it is classy looking.
4. i use a BIG comb and a ton of conditionner to untangle. plus it smels great! and it is really slick. cover the whole top of the tail and squirt it through it (has to be wet first) and comb from the top of tail strait down. as you do this wash it out by holding the hose up at the top of his tail and have the water run down it. :)
5. not so helpful on this one ;) lol hope you liked my tips!

me+ my horses
For the tail, I use either show sheen or cowboy magic. I wash the tail first and then DRENCH it in the show sheen or cowboy magic. Then let it dry, and then to brush it, run your hand down the tail until there is only about 6 inches sticking out of your hand at the bottom and start by just brushing the bottom, then gradually inch your hand up the tail and brush a little more and little more until you can brush through the whole thing. I would not recommend using a human conditioner. I tried it and it made the tails extremely sticky and gunky and I had to rewash all of them to get it out.
For overall tail maintenance, I use a detangler pretty much every day in the tail but I only brush through it about once a week. If you brush it daily you will pull a lot of it out or break the strands, but I still spray the detangler in daily so that when I do brush it, the brush glides through and it never gets bad to where the brush is going to break the tangled hairs.
Also, to keep the tail nice and thick you have to make sure that it never grows past your horse's fetlock. If it gets longer than that, then when they rest their back legs the tail will hit the ground and they step on it and pull pieces out and thin the tail out. If you keep it cut shorter, it will not get pulled out. If you want a longer tail then that, you will probably need to get a tail bag to keep it up in. The tail bag needs to be changed out regularly or else it will cause the hairs to break or be pulled out at the top and will end up thinning the tail.

1.Yes you could also ask your vet or a near by horse store.
2.Just go easy but let him have lots of breaks and just let him go @ his own pace. Ask your vet for help.
3.I dont quite understand by ask a near by horse store.
4.Yes there is such thing so try that and use a bit extra conditioner on his tail. If not trying cutting the knots out.
5.I dont understand.
