How does a horse communicate with other horses, with people?
Body language. They move their ears, body, facial expressions, tail, et cetera to communicate. They also neigh, whinny, nicker, and shriek.
Generally...
Ears forward=happy
ears slightly back=annoyed
ears pinned back=angry
tail swishing=annoyed
baring teeth=very angry
neigh=communication/location of other horses
nicker="hello"

They use their ears, their body and their vocals!
Pawing- My tummy hurts or I am annoyed
Ear back- I am listening
Ears pinned back- Angry
Nostrils flared- Smells something or scared
Ears pricked - What is that!?
One ear forward one back- I am listening but also a bit distracted
Bucking under saddle- Get off me, I am scared, I am fresh, I am hurting
Raising one back hoof- Get away or you will receive a nasty kick!
Squeal- Excited or angry
Nicker- Hey how are you
Snort- I am nervous or wary
Scream- Usually stallions fighting
Whinny- There you are!
Back foot cocked- Tired
Lips relaxed and head droopy- Sick or tired
Sweating without exercise- Sick
Kicking/ nipping at sides- Sick
Tail swishing not at flies- Go away, I am sick or angry
These are just a few different communication actions!
Tail held high- Excited/ bathroom
Turning Rear end toward others- Go away
Tossing head/ Shaking it- I have a headache, I am excited, I am angry

Have done lots of reading up on this, also have my own horse and used to have a different horse that was a problem/ rescue horse
Pointmissed pretty much has it. There are a few extra things that you shouldnt mistake- they also swish their tales to get rid of flies (and to whip people XD), sometimes when they show their teeth its called flehman, where they are smelling interesting things, or tasting something new, my friends horse pulls his top lip up and moves his lower jaw around ( i call it his eating warm ups lol)
The more you are around horses you will understand how to read their moods, and interpret what they are telling you
Good Luck

It's all about body language and very importantly also is eye contact. The angle in which they stand when approaching another horse and humans is important. The angle in which YOU approach him is important also. You don't realize, but the way you approach your horse can tell the horse what mood you are in! It's very interesting. Monty Roberts dvds are very helpful in this aspect. As a trainer I use this body language and eye contact on a daily basis....I use them at home with my own horses also, even when I am not training. The respect of your horse has a lot to do with how you respect him also.

body language.
they also play a lot of dominance games. watch horses in the pasture playing, and usually the one who is lowest on the totem pole is the one moving his feet the most. this is because horses play a game of whoever moves the most loses.
horses always communicate to humans, but unfortunately, the horse has been misunderstood all these years. people fail to see when their horse has lost confidence, or when their horse is totally taking advantage of them. when someone doesn't see that their horse has lost confidence, they just call the horse stupid and force him to do what they want. this ruins relationships realllly fast.
also, when you see a human moving more than a horse when trying to get it to lunge or something, that means that the horse is dominating!
there are soooooo much more things, but it would take forever to type, so i hope i helped!

They use body language to communicate. there are many ways to interprete what a horse is feeling or thinking. Its not just the usual ears back and they are mad kinda thing. sometimes they put their ears back because they are paying attention to something behind them.
I'm sure that if you look online for horse communication books they can more in depth and answer your questions. hope this helps
