I'm having to order new stirrup irons, and I was thinking how there are so many different types of stirrup irons nowadays!- Which are your favorite? Why?
People claim that the jointed irons help with joint pain, but have they helped you? Or is it just the wider tread? And then there's people like George Morris who don't like the jointed stirrups and claim that they have broken. Haha.
Have you had any experience with the light weight stirrup irons? Such as those by Prestige, Royal Rider, Equipe, etc.? Can you see much of a difference from traditional irons?
:)

personally, i have ankle issues. i have specialized sturrips
I have those really nice jointed sprenger stirrups (the black and blue colored ones) and I LOVE them! I took care of my friends horse over the summer and I had to ride in her saddle which had traditional stirrups on them and I hated it, my leg was all over the place and my heels were not down. Also my sisters friend rode in my sisters saddle one day which also has the jointed sprenger stirrups and, once around the ring at the trot she could already notice a difference in her heels and leg
I prefer traditional stirrup irons.
The jointed ones: Well they allow a rider to cheat, you need to have good position without the help of the irons.
Light weight ones, well I don't really see the point.
To the above rider that said she hates traditional because her leg is all over the place, you need to ride in traditional and learn to keep your leg still without the help of a jointed stirrup. Please do yourself a favor.

I use the jointed ones for my jumping saddle, but to be honest I don't find a noticeable difference between them and my regular irons that I have with my dressage saddle. I have bad joints (knees and ankles) and I personally can't tell the difference. I just use the jointed ones for safety (as opposed to a peacock stirrup). They are not the ones that rotate the leg, they are simply the ones with the rubber covered links on the sides.
I also really don't like the jointed stirrups that are meant to rotate and 'place' your leg in the correct position- I've heard of people breaking their ankles because of them, probably because they are relying on the stirrups to place their leg instead of learning how to do it themselves.

I use bent leg irons.
I ride quite a few youngsters and am sometimes unseated, these irons prevent me being dragged. Similar theory as the peacock irons but unlike the peacock irons they are designed to take an adults weight.
Peacock irons will bend and deform if you weigh over about 7 stone!
I dont see the point in light weight stirrups and i hate the jointed stirrups to the point i wont ride anything with them. I can keep my leg perfectly still with normal stirrups and even when bareback or stirrup less but i cant keep it still with the jointed one. so i loath the jointed ones.

I like solid weighted irons.
I have weighted jointed stirrups on my close contact saddle and I hate them.

I use jointed irons and I love them. They give more as you ride, not enough to loose your balance but enough to feel more comfortable. They also help my ankles I've never had ankle problems before and didn't think the traditional were a problem but I felt so much better after riding with the jointed ones. I only have the double jointed ones (not the super expensive triple or quadruple jointed ones) and I think they work wonderfully.
Just a tip: I had metal bottoms (I don't know if the proper term is cheese graters but that's what my tack shop guy calls them) just highly tractioned metal tread put in place of the rubber ones. I think the rubber ones slip and I had problems loosing my stirrups in the show ring because of rain. If you ever ride outside, I highly reccomend them.
