Body clipping a horse?

Body clipping a horse?
I just got a new horse that is all black , but he is sun bleached

you can see where his new hair is growing in from little nics he got from fighting an fussing out on pasture before I got him

I want him to be as black as possiable and I will start stalling him in the day with turn out at night.

My question is If I body clip him how long will it take for the new hair to grow back in?
It should take a good four months for his coat to grow back. But if its color your looking for, then don't clip him. His coat will go from sunbleached black to a steal grey. The best thing to do is lightly blanket him. That way he can get his sleep when he needs it, and he gets to play in the sun. With my black, as long as there was a covered shelter with some hay underneath, he would stay there. But thats not your horse. Don't take away his sunlight, it will effect his over all performance in the end.
Good Luck! hope this helps
Well it usually fills in within three or four months depending on the horse
BUT its a little late to be body clipping your horse. He is probably shedding, and that will make his hair grow in badly. It will be best to just let him shed out

Also there is a product that you can buy that should help.

I have used it and I have had friends that have used it with great results!

But it is too late to body clip. You need to body clip right after the coat comes in all the way in winter (November to January) or after the winter coat has been shed (may to September).

Good luck
If you clip him he'll look like a dark grey. Why not just shed him out with a shedding blade!
well I have heard lots of controversy on this subject...some say clipping now will damage the summer coat.....I don't believe this and have spent many many years as a professional show groom, we've body clipped our horses at all times of the year and just needed 6 weeks with slickers and blankets to allow the coat to bloom out...never once had a problem with a dull coat.....and Ive body clipped well over a 1000 horses. I am getting ready to body clip my guy, some say no too late but I say do what you want.....I would allow him a good 6 weeks and do lots of rubbing with shami or towels to bring out the natural oils.
I live in Wisconsin and since its so cold we never body clip our horses except for in the summer. So for now if you live anywhere cold I do not reccomend body clipping in this season. And in the winter no matter where you live the sun tends to bleach out the coat more. So I would recommed getting a flysheet to block the sun from bleaching out the coat, if you live in a warm climate. If your still in the winter season get a thick turnout blanket. Otherwise in the spring and summer try feeding a coat enhancing supplement. Hope this helps!
