I just came across something on the internet that said bettas are more prone to fin rot in hard alkaline water than soft acidic water. Can anyone confirm or refute this?
Well, yes and no. It's not that they are more prone to fin rot specifically in a hard, alkaline water. It is that they are a fish accustomed to a softer, more acidic water. Keeping them in harder, more basic water tends to depress their immune system, which causes them to be a bit more susceptible to any form of infection (bacterial, fungal, etc.) or parasitic infestation.
Betta do prefer water to be lower pH (6-7.5) and low/medium hardness.
Keeping them in very hard or alkaline water could stress them and make them more vulnerable to infections like finrot.
