whats the actual reason if you have a filter?
the reason you have a filter is so it keeps control of the ammonia that is in the tank. It also is the home for the good bacteria to grow and develop. It also does a very important job of catching the fishes waste. You need to do water changes so that you are putting some new water in to make it a bit more clearer and it also takes some of the bad bacteria out and puts some new good bacteria in.

A filter will break down ammonia into nitrite and finally into nitrate in what is known as the nitrogen cycle, however nitrate isn't broken down. It simply keeps building up until it is removed via water changes. High levels of nitrate can inhibit fish growth and may cause health problems, it is also a major food source for unwanted algae.
Another reason is that detritus can be become trapped in the substrate, if this is allowed to build up it will be start to decompose, creating even more problems with water quality.

The filter provides a place for beneficial bacteria to live. It also catches loose particles flying in the water, which you wash off when you clean your filter cartridges.
Now, while beneficial bacteria breaks down the waste, the stuff that's leftover (which is invisible) is still in the water. You must get rid of that with water changes, or it will pile up to a toxic level.

Yes you absolutely, positively must do it. A filter only clears out the food/debris/junk that floats around the water. However the fish themselves produce nitrates (or is it nitrites, never can remember) which seriously alters the water quality

the water ages. fish excrete ammonia, kinda like fish poop... this pollutes the water and is very toxic. luckily, theres "good" bacteria in your tank that builds up over time, most of it is in the filter. this good bacteria neutralizes the ammonia into a less toxic form. this less toxic crap is not bad for your fish, but if it builds up over time, it will make the water very acidic, which will kill the good bacteria, and the ammonia will build up. the filter only removes solid particles in the water, removes dissolved waste, and helps with getting rid of ammonia. so the reason you change water in the tank is because you dont want the waste products to accumulate too much, because your filter cant get rid of them. believe me change ur water or your fish will die :)

The filter just keeps it clean as long as it can. Eventually the food will make the water murky and the fish will not like that. It also makes your fish happier!

Not to mention the multitude of hormones and other things like phosphate and silicate which will build up in the tank as well.
