My goldfish has ich! Rid-ich not working!! Help save a fish's life!?
I just got another goldfish (a comet) and put it in my tank without quarantining it, and voila my other two fancy goldfish got ich. I think I was a little late in diagnosing it though, because on maybe the second day of using Rid-Ich one of my older fancy goldfish died. I'm now on the fourth treatment day, and it seems to have gotten much worse for my other goldfish! He seems to have more white spots, and is lazier with his fins partly clamped to his sides. Is it not working? When should I expect the ich to go away?!? I've been adding a teaspoon of Rid-ich every 24 hours, doing the water changes, have removed the carbon from my filter and everything!! Please, what can I do to help my fish! I don't want him to die too; then i'll just have the offending ich-carrier left!
First you need to find the reason it has ich...Test your water, or take a sample to a pet store(not walmart)a real pet store who sells fish. The Ph for goldfish should be around 7.5, which means that the water is more alkaline...you should buy a test kit, preferably aquarium pharmacueticals, where you fill a little tube with aqua. water to the line, then you add three drops.put cap on,and turn it upside down 3or 4 times.wait a minute.then use the chart that comes with your kit.Kit costs no more than $5.00 and will last you a long while...testing should be done once a week.in the kit is a glass vial w/cap,the testing solution in drop formula, and the chart. If your water is too low in ph,such as 6.5,then you can add baking soda to raise the ph...this is a home remedy that i have used on 48 fish tanks i had at a pet store I owned for 9 years. If it is too high...which will be very blue in the vial, then you add white vinegar. The amount you add for either product depends on your tank size as well as the level of ph.start off for a ten gallon tank with one teaspoon of baking soda to raise it.wait for a couple of hours and re-test.put the baking soda to raise the ph in your filter,so that it flows through and mixes better.with the white vinegar, use 1/2 a teaspoon to start off...wait like before then re-test.once you get the ph level at 7.5,then you can now medicate your fish.Your fish gets ich from stress and is also caused by a fungal infection,so water ph is very important.Temerature is too.Goldfish are cold water fish.they do not require a heater as long as your home doesn't get below 60 degrees.Do not do anymore water changes until you test your water source...the tap water. This way you will know the tap water ph and that will indicate to you what needs to be done.Another thing about tap water...Is it well water or city water? City water would mean that you need to buy chlorine remover drops.Well water is fresh, and the ph is usually more alkaline than acidic.Buy also a tester for ammonia.again it is cheap.Only do partial water changes(1/4) when there is excessive amount of ammonia levels, and it does happen more frequently with goldfish than any other fish.Ammonia is excreted from the goldfish itself...to help with this, but a few aquarium plants, because these plants absorb the ammonia and break it down into a less harmless chemical. When you do a partial water change, use a siphon that is made for fish tanks...should be around 10.00,but will last you 2-3 years or longer. the gets down into the gravel. And a bucket. You will be amazed at the dirt. But don't suck it all out, because in your gravel, this stuff is beneficial to your overall tank health. It is a way that promotes good bacteria to live. Do not overfeed. Also,Goldfish need some Aquarium salt...that will help with disease...follow the directions...DO NOT USE TABLE SALT.If you treat your fish with antibiotics, use the pill form or tablet.Again Aquarium Pharmaceutical company makes the aquarium ph test kit, the aquarium salt, they do have a ph adjuster kit that comes with both drops to lower or raise your ph.One more suggestion:Fish species comes in all shapes and sizes...and also require certain ph levels. Some pet stores run their tanks on a universal filtration system. Find a local, small pet store where each fish tank is on its own system, and this is the place to buy your fish...because any fish professional will tell you the truth about commercial filters like walmart uses. One fish gets sick...the other tanks as well can be infected. We always used individual filters.some were on the back,in which you buy cartridges for,or you can make up your own cartridges, some we used were cheap plastic inground filters, where you add the carbon and floss.they worked just as well, but sometimes floated to the top if the fish knocked in to them,my point is that you need to keep goldfish really separate from other tropical fish. There are some really cool goldfish that you can purchase if you are looking for variety, color, and you can find these buy doing your own search(goldfish types). But you can see them even better at www.thatfishplace.com or www.thatpetplace.com. Hope I have helped.I could go on and on,but if you need any more information, don't hesitate to contact me...
Just knowledge from owning a pet store and having a great fish room containing over 48 tanks...and people would drive 45 miles just to buy our fish.I miss the store, but it was hard work, and I decided to homeschool my kids.Right now, I have 4 fish tanks in my house. One is specifically for goldfish.
If they are not salt like specks all over the fish its not ick/white spot, its finrot or velvet, usually associated with poor water quality, are you sure its ick?
use something called ich clear fizzing tabs. get these at wal mart. follow all directions. lower water temp check ph, nitrites and nitrates..
im sorry i dont know as my goldfish never had ich (yet) but iv starred your question in the hope that it will be noticed better and you get a better answer good luck

pls update to how you get on x x
get some aquarium salt and raise the temperature to about 85.
Your local fishery will have a bottle of something called fish mox! It is amoxicillan tablets that you throw in the tank and they dissolve. This should help all the fish heal and maybe even catch something you u dont see! Its cheap too!!
FYI- I use the Fix Mox for myself as an antibiotic! The ingredients are nothing except amoxicillan! Cheaper than a doctor visit. The bottle says not for human consumption...of course..but the ingredients is a tell all! My family takes them several times a year when the girls bring a virus home from school!
flush him
