I have a question about African Cichlids?
I have a 10 gallon tank with one kenyi cichlid and my friend has a 15 gallon tank with 13 african cichlids each about 3 inches long. He has had the tank for about 6 years with only having one of his fish die. He never has to buy fish for they always breed in his tank. They all seem very happy. I know many of you will say it is overcrowded but listen. How many african cichlids can i put in my tank and which ones would go well with eachother? Please don't give me a list of expensive fish. Thanks!
While you can overstock with Mbuna Africans, it's not recommended to cram them in small tanks! Just because your friend has done it doesn't mean it was right or fair on the fish.

In a 10 gallon that tiny volume doesn't provide some of the shy versus more aggressive Mbunas with the hiding places and territories they need. It's just plain too tiny.

The only African's I would ever recommend for a 10 gallon are Neolamprologus multifasciatus, Tanganyikan Cichlids, maybe one male and several females with their shells, that's it.

Kenyi's are particularly territorial and potentially aggressive and really aren't recommended for smaller than 40 gallons. If you put anything else with yours in a 10 gallon it's likely to get bullied with nowhere to run.

you can put AS MANY as you want! lol its YOUR fish tank!!!!! lol I would put like 8...=p

Put like 8 colorful african cichlids!!!! colorful is awsome...looks hot when its colorful

Best of Luck!
Depends on how long you want them to live. I have 9, 1 catfish & 2 pleco in a 75 gal. with good filteration & it requires alot of upkeep.
