Around a month ago I bought a single goldfish. Today, I purchased a larger tank and another goldfish to go with it. I noticed as I put them together that after a while, the fish I had bought first began 'nipping' and the new goldfish and therefore I separated them. Is this normal behaviour between two fish meeting or should I keep them apart? Any genuine help will be much appreciated.
Goldfish are naturally bullies and will set up a kind of pecking order in small confines. How big is the bigger tank? If it's still not big enough one will continue to bully the other until it becomes fatally injured or starves.
Are they both of the same variety? Common/Comet types can fatally injure more delicate Fancies, almost by accident!
For a pair I would recommend no smaller than 30 US gallons long.
