a sump would be all kinds of better
if you can afford it, the Eheim Pro 3 would be your best choice.. down side to it is that it costs near ￡400.
an alternative to that would be the Fluval FX5.. imo a very good canister filter thats half the price of the Eheim. which is why i use 2 on my 125g clown loach tank

I have an Eheim canister on mine and I love it. It is so easy to clean.
Note: What is your price range? Eheim is the best canister filter and is a bit pricey but worth it.
