the tank & tankmates:
its a ten gallon tank with 2 plants, gravel, a heater, a sponge filter, and an ornament, he shares it with 3 other male guppies and a mystery snail...
I read that aquarium salt helps... i have some but i cant use it because of the snail... what do i do??? will it affect my other beautiful little guppies?

You don't want to use regular aquarium salt for this. It can make dropsy WORSE!!
Are the scales of your guppy sticking out so he looks like a pinecone? http://article.dphnet.com/image/dropsy.j... That would be dropsy.
Instead of aquarium salt, you want to add Epsom salt instead. You only need a little of this, just 1/8 teaspoon per 5 gallons of water. It won't hurt your other guppies, and shouldn't hurt the snail, but if you're worried is there somewhere you can move him or the fish that you're treating so they aren't in the same tank?
Before you add the Epsom salt, do a partial water change. Sometimes dropsy can be cause just by poor water quality. If he doesn't respond to the Epsom salt after a few days, then I would try using an antibiotic in case the cause was in internal infection. But apart from these, and keeping the water quality good, there's not a lot you can do.
Hope he gets better.

call ur local vet.
so you're sure that it's dropsy huh?
okay, the first thing you need to know is that salt is not the cure, it only helps the fish feel better by drawing out excess liquid.
now, you also need to temporarily remove the snails, try floating a vegetable leaf on your tank, and soon snails will be snacking on it. that's when you pick the veggie up along with the snails.
luckily there is a medicine for curing dropsy, it's a kind of anti bacterial liquid and you're supposed to mix it with the fish food, and feed them.
keep the temperature stable and keep your tank away from any stressful harm, let the fish take it easy. and they'll son heal!
no worries!
good luck!

yes, i've also once had an experience with dropsy, it killed one of my zebra danio, but now the others are cured and safe. :)
