Dwarf Puffer Fish? How hard is it to keep them?
I have been looking into Dwarf Puffer fish lately because they are so cute and from what I've read sound like they would be some great fish to have. It seems like they can be kind of difficult to care for though. I was wondering if anyone out there has some and how different are they from other types of fish?
They are just like all the other puffers except they don't need brackish water and they aren't as prone to their beak over growing. Although I would still feed them those tiny black pond snails once a month in addition to blood worms and brine shrimp. They won't eat flakes or pellets only live or frozen live foods. Their aggression is similar to Cichilds and I wouldn't keep 2 males in less than 15 gallons. You can keep one male and 3 females in a 20. Basically 5 gallons per fish Except if you got males. I bought 4 about a year ago and 3 are still alive, the one that died musta had some illness because he was fine one day and then the next he was dead. Easy to care for as long as you keep up your water changes. Here's a great link, Good Luck.

I love my DPF! I started with 3 and one died right away. The other two (both female) are thriving. They have decimated my snail population. One readily eats frozen bloodworms and the other one just stares at me in disbelief. I get a weekly handful of snails from my local fish store.

The require regular and large water changes - some say up to 50%/week.

Keeping the water clean and finding a food that they like are really the only extras.

Oh, and their eyes are freaky - they can move separately. totally whack!
