My mother lives by herself and the other day she was attacked by 2 pitt bulls. she made it into the house before any real serious damage was done thank God. But now I am worried about her. The dogs were strays and could come back. Is there a dog that I could get for her that could protect her? She is scared of pitts, so maybe a doberman?? She is in her 40's so she is still plenty young to take care of a dog. Can anything other than a pit take on a pit and still live?
why don't you try a german sheprd
Possible a German Sheppard.however, I would have her call animal control if she sees them again because it would still be a two against one fight. I am totally against animal violence even if it is dogs fighting. You could get her a water gun to carry around with her and fill it with ammonia. She could squirt it at the dogs it will not kill them or hurt them I don't think. but the smell should knock the breath out of them. That is what someone has told me to do before. If you get her a dog for protection she will most likely become attached and be very upset if the Pitt-bulls hurt it. Hope that helps and I hope your mom stays safe :) Good Luck.
Werewolves are the strongest dogs.
Report the attack and let animal control deal with it. you should only get her a dog because she wants a compainion not because she needs something that can take a pit bull down. and 2 againist 1 just ain't fair, Plus a dog trained to be aggressive may turn on her. Go buy her a bat so if the the dogs go after her again she can defend herself.
Get her a mastiff, the king of all dogs! They are huge, human huge!
Full grown they can weigh 180 to 200 pounds or more. But, even a pit bull would think twice before going after one of them! A Sharpei
(spelling?) has a stronger bite than a pit bull, but, I don't know how well of a protector they are. A Bull Mastiff might be a good choice.
Do some internet research to find the perfect dog for your Mom.

Any dog can be protective if trained to do so, but to take on a pit bull is a different story. Your best bet would be to find an adult Rottweiler to adopt. In the meantime I would suggest calling animal control immediately and have the dogs removed before they hurt, or even worse, kill someone or their beloved pet!
Get a dog attack taser...
Or if you are stuck in the dog thing, an American Rottie would be a great choice BUT you will need to be a good and responsible dog owner and send to to a training school. Good dog security training schools could cost as much as $10, 000 and can last 4-6 weeks of which you will drop the dog off and pick him up at the end when they are done training him. This will not be a pet, it will be a trained machine so your mum will need to understand that cuddly stuff wont be able to happen and could be harmful to the dogs training.
Dogs are not automatically trained and ready out of the 'box', they are not weapons and they can be trained to be good or bad.
But as I mentioned before a taser made for dog attacks, pepper spray or the dog attack whistle would be the best bet.
Dogs should not be used as personal protection as they are animals and can sometimes turn on you. Even the best trained guard dogs, military and police dogs can have problems.

Rottweiler or Doberman, may be rottweiler will be better.
Werewolves!!
You can always call animal control you know. No matter how many times you call they must go look for the dogs.
Agree with Brandy. Great point...they are NOT weapons and she'll be risking her life anyways with her own dog
