My dog has the complete Pet Travel Scheme passport and all relevant documentation. The Defra website doesn't state weather or not we can travel via our own car with the dog to Europe. All it says is the dog must not travel via private boat or aircraft. Nothing about automobiles. This seems like a pretty major question and one that should be answered on their website don't you think?
Yes and when you get to France the dog can legally drive too...
Yes you can ........... think you need to contact Defra to complain their site in unclear.....although if you are travelling in a car how else would the dog travel?
You do realise that going across by ferry you will have to leave your dog in the car or the ferry kenneling as the ferries don't normally allow dogs on deck level.

Animal behaviourist
Yes - but BEFORE you leave, contact DEFRA - phone and speak to a person - (and your vet should be up to speed with what's required for Pet Passport too) so you are fully aware of the implications of taking your dog out of the country - and more importantly, bringing him back in again. The last thing you (or he) needs is to have him quarantined on re-entry!!
Put your dog in a kennel 'till you get back like everyone else.
Yes you can.
Go to this page & click on Rail or sea and it brings up all the accepted routes:

People going to/from shows in Europe do it all the time!
It doesn't make it very clear but the difference is PRIVATE boat or plane (means you can't use your yacht or Lear jet!)

Automobiles are not listed on the defra website as it is not actually possible for you to drive across the English channel, and so they don't bother listing it as one of the options. If there was a large bridge that went to France then I'm sure they would have included rules about traveling with your dog by car.
As I assume you were planning on getting across the channel by boat then you should just follow the rules accordingly

no please if u travel by boat it may jump from it . so lock it in a
kennel or take a vet with u who is having a passport.

It isn't to do with the "type" of vehicle but the "method".
A private plane or private boat aren't PETS-approved carriers. A private plane or boat could land at uncontrolled airports/ports where there are no HMRC or Defra officers ... and I'm sure that this happens all the time!

So, so long as you have an approved ferry, Eurotunnel or flight booked, it should be alright. You may need to notify the carrier that you are taking a dog under PETS as there may be a restriction on the number of animals that they can carry.
