My husband gave our 5-6 week old puppy a vaccine but he doesn't think it went past the skin. Is this harmful? The puppy seems to be fine but we are worried about her catching a disease from outside.
So, if it goes into the skin is that okay or is it supposed to go past the skin into something else?

Why didn't you take this pup to the vet for its vaccinations? We don't know if you gave the injection properly or not.
What vaccine did you use?
If you're going to take the risk of vaccinating a pup yourself at least you should first learn how to do it properly.
You will have no proof of vaccination anyway because it needs to be signed off by a qualified vet.
Now, as far as finding out whether the vaccination was effective or not you will have to pay for a titer test which will cost a heap more than having a vet do the vaccination in the first place.
ADDED: I already said how you can find out if the vaccination is effective or not. Did you miss the part when I suggested having a titer test done.
You won't know if the pup is protected unless you do have it titered.
What part of that aren't you getting?

apparently your husband is one of two things: a know-it-all or a cheapskate. Either way since he clearly admitted to not knowing if it got past the skin then he needs to do the easiest thing (which was so easy it clearly eluded his thought process) he needs to take the puppy to the vet and find out for sure and stop trying to do it himself as he doesn't know what he's doing and leave it to the vet from know on.
This pup is too little and young to be away from its mother..... why do you have it.. most pups dont get there first injection until 7-8 weeks
Dont let her out until the full course of innoculations is complete

Sub-Q=under the skin. Of course it has to go *past* the skin or you would be shooting it on the pups' fur.
Load syringe.
Make sure all air bubbles are out.
Insert needle *under* the skin in nape of neck.
Draw back to see if you *hit* a vein.
If you see blood-try again.
If you don't see blood-inject.
Bingo-all done!

I am SO against supposed 'reputable breeders ' or ANYONE who did not go to vet school giving vaccines ....would you give your kids vaccine rather than take it to a medical professional????
I get hammered on here for byb yet my pups see a vet min 2-3 by the time they are ready for 2nd shots .....

Vaccines are supposed to go under the skin. I'm not sure where exactly you think this vaccine went if it did not end up on top of the skin (you would have noticed a wet spot). In short, YES vaccines can cause damage if they are given improperly. If they are given in the muscle they can cause damage to the muscle. Intranasal bordatella, which is supposed to go up the nose, will cause the skin around the injection site to die and slough off (and become infected) if given under the skin. It's pretty much impossible to give a vaccine intradermally (in the skin itself) using the standard type vaccine needles.
Please, for your puppy's sake, take her to the vet for the rest of her vaccines. Clearly you do not know what you are doing and have no business trying to vaccinate her yourself. Even if the injection was given properly, she is still at an increased risk for catching the diseases for which she has been vaccinated because OTC vaccines purchased from petstores and farm stores may not have been handled properly and may not be effective.
I would also strongly recommend that you get this puppy signed up for puppy classes. She is FAR too young to be away from mom and litter and is at significant risk for developing severe behavioral problems due to being removed too early.
