Advices for choosing a dog.?

I just gave away a Labrador Retriever becuz my parents didn't want to keep him cause of his size. They told me tht i could get a smaller dog.
Which dog is small, smart, playful, and calm? I was thinking of dachsunds, boston terrier, australian terrier, or beagle.

P.S--I was always wondering y beagles were cheap. Are they hard to take care of?

Ok well beagles bark-A LOT! And dachshunds aren't what you would call calm...
But both are still great dogs. I would go with the Boston. They are all those things and more. My mother is always saying he was the best pet we've ever had. Boston's are great small dogs but the only problem is they tend to flatulate. They are sweet to everyone and don't need much space or excersize. They are very playful and could live in the city or country. They are also highly intelligent and easy to train. Bostons are on the calm but playful side of the terriers. Australian terriers are fine but they are really yappy and hyper like the dachsund.

The only reason I can think of, as for why beagles would be cheap, is that there are so many in shelters, they are very common. I have a beagle mix, and my parents have a beagle/golden mix.

Anyway, some other small and medium dog breeds include Yorkies, Maltese, West Highland Terriers, Scottish Terriers, Corgis (Welsh and Cardigan), and Mini Pinchers.

Beagles are loud, they shed, they don't train easily because they are stubborn, they are prone to overeating, and they are incredibly friendly and outgoing.

They're cheap because people don't realize that what beagles were bred for, and they're not prepared to put up with the hardheadedness and the beagle howling.

I wouldn't advise getting any dog.

Your parents gave away your dog already. That means that they obviously don't like dogs. What makes you think they won't get rid of the new one? It will just end up in a shelter.

Sure, your parents might say that a smaller dog is okay. But what happens when they find a problem with that dog? What if it barks too much, or if it can't be trained? They'll just get rid of that one, too.

Don't get another dog. It's not fair to give it away to a shelter, which is bound to happen.

Ok, so most small dogs are not that calm. Beagles are good, but they need careful training. I'd consider adopting one. You don't always know what you're getting, and a lot of times they're already trained. You can research and take breed quizzes on

Any sort of terriers, whether they be Boston or Australian, are going to be rambunctious and hyper. And I would say Beagle, but they bark WAY too much!
Go with a Chihuahua or a Dachshund. They are small and playful as puppies- and they grow up to be pretty good dogs.

mutts tend to have less health problems than the pure breeds, because the pure breeds have been through a lot of interbreeding. I have a cock-a-poo and he is playful and has the smarts of a poodle. He is also small, about 15-20lbs. I would suggest looking into some of the mixed breeds.

Poodles poodles poodles i cant stress it enough they are perfect they are small they dont shed they come in alot of colors and they are very very smart they pick up on everything fast they are great
