how old does a dog usually live?
he was 11 and did not show any signs that he was sick.
she said he just started having trouble breathing so they put him in the car to go to the vet and he died in the car.
what do you think caused that? was it old age?

First let me say how sorry I am for your mom and your loss.
It is always a very hard thing to lose a loved one.
Really it all depends on the breed, some die at a younger age than others.
My Flat Coats for example are very susceptible to cancer and it takes them quite often at a young age. Recently I lost one at 7 but have also lost them at the young age of 5.
Like you I have also lost them in a day where their were no signs of any illness but that night had to send them on their journey across the Rainbow Bridge.
Perhaps this poem wil help during your grieving.
I'M STILL HERE
I stood beside your bed last night,
I came to have a peek.
I could see that you were crying,
You found it hard to sleep.
I whined to you softly,
As you brushed away a tear.
"It's me, I haven't left you,
I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."
I was close to you at breakfast,
I watched you pour the tea.
You were thinking of the many times
Your hands reached down to me.
I was with you at the shops today
Your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels,
I wish I could do more.
I was with you at my grave today,
You tend it with such care.
I want to reassure you
That I'm not lying there.
I walked with you toward the house,
As you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you,
I smiled and said "It's me."
You looked so very tired
And sank into a chair
I tried so hard to let you know
That I was standing there.
It's possible for me to be
So near you every day.
To say to you with certainty,
"I never went away".
You sat there very quietly,
Then you smiled, I think you knew.
In the stillness of that evening,
I was very close to you.
The day is over...
I smile and watch you yawning,
And say "Good night, God bless,
I'll see you in the morning".
And when the time is right
For you to cross the brief divide.
I'll rush across to greet you,
And we'll stand side by side.
I have so many things to show you,
There is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out,
And then come home to be with me.
Good Luck and God Bless

My Cookie was 10 years old when she died. That's around 70 years for humans. (+ / - )
One day she was STILL jumping and playing around. The next day I ended up taking her to the vet who, bless his heart , spend his ENTIRE week-end with her . 4 blood transfusions later , he said that there was nothing else he could do for her and that I had a decision to make.
She had an enlarged spline.
I did what was best for her.
She died in my arms.
She died KNOWING that I was there.
I made it as comfortable as I could.
I HOPE I never have to go through that again.
I'm starting to cry now as I write this , and she died 6 years ago.
I will never forget how her tail would stick straight up into the air as she played.
Or as she jumped around in the snow.
Those are the memories I WANT to keep.
I'm so sorry for your mother's loss.
Yours also.
God bless

I'm very sorry for your loss! The only way to find out for sure, what the dog died of, is to have your vet do a Necropsy on the dog! A Necropsy is like a Human Autopsy! It could have been many different things, that could have caused his death.
depending on the breed it could have been a good age, it seems the larger the breed the shorter the life span.... great danes tend to only live 8 years... most of the dogs we`ve had lived around 10 years we had a mutt live 16 tho! sorry for your loss though :(
Lot's of dog food has things that causes dogs to live shorter lives to around 11 (thats average) But some dogs can live to 27 I'm very sorry for your loss
dog food secrets
old age, most likely. (10-15 is the average)
sorry about that..
sorry about that..
umm. i think dogs usually live to be 14 or 15 but it could be dif. for dif. dogs...
It depends what breed it was hun. My collie cross spaniel died aged 16.
So I think there was another reason for your mums dog's death.
I am very sorry about your loss.
