Why are there so many staffordshire bull terriers in rescue shelters?!?
I dont understand... I am currently looking for a JRT, and from the shelter, but 90% of the dogs are staffordshire bull terriers!! Why is this? I have seen these teenage boys walking around with them, i think its to make them look tough (so they think). Could it be that they finally decide they dont want it anymore, or cant handle it, or what?! Why do they get a dog if they cant look after it?
you answered your own question, yes sad, but true
They buy them so they can look cool, then they realize the huge responsibility of owning a dog, and surrender it to a shelter. You answered your own question btw.
A lot of the ones owned by teen boys are just trying to look like tough guys. Then they realize what a good-natured dog Staffies actually are and have no purpose for them any long. What's a sweet dog going to do for their "image"?

Also, in a lot of areas, BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) is being passed and Pits are being taken from their owners or dumped off. BSL is total crap and is killing a wonderful breed.
You are seeing APBT's or mixes, AmStaffs & mixes . Aka Pit Bulls. You do not find too many Staffordshire Bull Terriers in shelters. All the years of doing rescue I have only come across two. And a possible mix of of about 4.

If they are labled as Staffordshire Bull Terriers 9 out of 10 they are mislabled. Shelters sometimes do this to stay away from the "Pit Bull" label and I do not approve of that. It hurts the dogs more than it helps in the long run.
There is a difference between the breeds mentioned.
Staffordshire Bull Terriers are only 14-16 inches tall and weigh 23-40lbs.
Amstaffs are 16-19 inches weigh 50-65lbs. Give or take
APBT's 18-22 inches some smaller weighing between 30-70lbs depending onlines.

People get these breeds dump them cause of landlords, to hard to handle. BSL! Backyard breeders are breeding these dogs like they are going out of style & they are seeing dollar signs and there are just not enough homes for them.
rescuer, trainer, owner of 4 APBT's and more
Many times shelters don't properly label dogs, especially when it comes to the bully breeds. Many times they label them staffies because the APBT has such a bad name that people won't adopt them. It's very sad and many of they dogs in the shelters are sweet dogs. The question about why people get a dog if they can't take care of it is asked every day. Many people want the bully breeds because it makes them look tuff and when they realize they actually have to spend money to take care of it they give it up. The breed is very easy and cheap to aquire because it is being bred by horrible BYB's and given to anyone. Many end up in shelters because there are so many complaints from neighbors or whatever that the people give them up. There are many reasons people give up their dogs, or their dogs get seized. It is so sad to me how many people neglect them. Good for you looking to adopt!
Because they are dangerous animals
