She came to school practically laughing as she was showing everyone a picture of her completely shaven dog. It looked like a blind person cut the dog's hair. That poor dog looked so miserable on the pic. Anyway the reason why she cut the dog's hair was due to her dog scratching itself all the time. Couldn't she just buy some flea shampoo? Do you think she is a horrible pet owner?
I don't see how shaving a dog will stop the scratching.. then off course you don't the exact story behind it.. she could be lying and the pet had matted fur & thats why she had to get it it shaved..
she should definitely not be laughing at the dog..and should have taken it to a vet first if she didnt (of course you dont know if the story she said is true,so she could have, but gotten a different diagnosis then what she is telling everyone).
As for being a bad pet owner, I think it really depends on eactly why the dog had to loose all the fur..and then how will she kept the dog after from getting sunburned and/or cold.
mrs.mkt403- So you think everyone that has answered, you hope doesnt have a dog? I personally am co-owner of 8 dogs and are all healthy, beautiful, & well kept dogs....so sorry, I know how to take care of dogs, its apparent you dont know yourself for making that assumption..

That's terrible - cutting a dog's hair randomly because it itches isn't going to solve anything, and laughing about it at school is pretty mean too. Flea shampoo isn't necessarily the answer but she does need to take her dog to the vet. Cutting its hair isn't going to help it either.
Although I wouldn't do that, I disagree with you. It's her dog and she can do what she wants with is. And since cutting the hair doesn't actually hurt the dog (unless it has to be out in the snow or something), it's not a problem. Unfortunately, her dog will just have to look rather silly for a while.
Did she say it was because of a flea infestation? Because that is no reason to shave a dog. She should have taken it to a vet for flea products that work. NOW her dog can get a nice sunburn, putting it at risk for skin cancer. Way to go, her.
its hair. dogs dont care. they dont have mirrors.
I don't think she is a horrible pet owner but I don't think she should have shaved the dog, especially if you live somewhere that is cold out right now because here in pa it is pretty dang cold out tonight.
I don't think she is the pet owner. Therefore, she can't be a horrible pet owner. I think some adults in her life are dropping the ball and letting her do this. If she did indeed shave the dog because it was scratching so much, it's on the Parents. If there's fleas or Mange or whatever in the home, it's up to the Parents. I'd feel really sorry for her. She's not horrible, the parents are. Feel sorry for her.
its not wrong. But it isnt gonna make a diffresence. She shouldnt have taken matter into her hand
who cares it will grow back. it could have had bad condition hair from previous owner or anything. obviously there was a point behind it
i am a dog woof woof
Poor dog, lazy owner.Shampoo or a trip to the vet would have been better.
umm its hair, it will grow back....fleas may have nothing to do with it, she should take it to the vet it could have skin issues.
Do i think she is a horrible owner by shaving the dogs coat?

1. Hair grows back
2. If it looked funny, it probably is. The dog is not at school and is probably not going to have it's feelings hurt
3. In most cases, the dog doesn't feel miserable with it's hair cut off unless it is making the dog cold or too hot
4. Itching can sometimes be a reason to cut a dog's hair off (eg. hot spots)
5. LOL!!! The dog probably does look ridiculous.

Ok, I have read all the other answers. I am sorry, but they all are AWFUL people and I hope they never own a dog.
If the dog was itchy, it should first have gone to the vet to make sure it was not a skin condition; such as allergies, heat, cold, mange, etc.
After a clean bill of health, if the dog is in AZ weather (where we live) they may need the haircut. You could not imagine the idiots here who get a St. Bernard even though it gets 115 here in the summer.
Still, her parents should care about the dog first, and get it to a vet. If she is "laughing" about the dog, she (and her parents) are probably the kind of people who get a dog, don't get it fixed, let it run loose with no training, don't get it micro-chipped, don't worry about dental or health care, and generally are AWFUL dog owners.
If she is "laughing" at it, she is not yet a horrible pet owner, but will be once she is on her own, as her parents have taught her nothing else.
Her parents (and her in the future) are the reason so many dogs are put down each year.
I agree with you. It is wrong.
If you get a dog, it is a LIFE LONG (dogs life expectancy) project. With many vet bills.
I think YOU WILL BE AN EXCELLENT DOG PARENT ONE DAY! If you are this concerned now, you get it.
It is very sad that so many people don't!
