i have had her for 1 month and got her from the pound, She wont go to the toilet when we go out. she lives outside but comes inside sometimes. she will either wee inside or at the back steps what can i do
she wees when she sees you because she is excited to see you. I don't really know the whole story but it would seem hard for her to know the difference on where to go when she lives outside. she must go outside as you are not with her all the time. I don't see any way she can learn unless she lives inside. if worried about the mess confine her to one room with puppy pads or newspaper. when she gets this then she can come into other rooms and when you are gone keep her in one roomor a large cage if you are not gone too many hours.cathy p

The above answer was right. She wees when she see's you because she is excited. This problem can be made worse if you make a fuss of her when you get home. So when you get home the best thing is to either ignore her until she calms down or give her a quick pat and good girl and then wait till she is calm. So go inside put your bag away or go and turn the tv on and sit down on the couch and by then she should have calmed down and you can pat and cuddle her. It may seem mean to ignore her because she is so little but you'll be amazed by the difference if you don't make a fuss or get her excited she will eventually stop peeing. If you tell her off for doing it, it will just confuse her as she probably doesn't recognize she's doing anything wrong. She just excited to see you and probably being submissive because your her leader. Leader's don't fuss over subordinates. So give that a try and i'm pretty sure it would work.
First, don't act like you are so ecstatic to see her, just act like its a normal day and talk to her like she is your bff. She will pick up on this and not be so prone to get your attention, which causes her to pee. Most people don't believe it, but it is true, dogs for sure can tell what is up with their owners, and perhaps, she thinks you come home just to see if she will do what you expect. Change the role, come home and just pet her and say hi _______. What are we doing today? Let's go out first so I can see what you have been doing. Okay, we can go inside, but no weeing inside, be a good girl. Put her on a schedule, like every 2 hours, take her out to pee and talk to her about what you expect her to do. I know it sounds weird, but especially dogs, need to be talked to and reasoned with. I raised german shepards and I talked to them like I talked to my friends (NO BABY TALK), my dogs used to wait at their food dishes until I said Go ahead now eat. Just remember, they are human too. Good Luck!!!
Been there, Done that
SHe is lonely. To change this behavior takes time. When you come home, don't walk in your door, walk into the backyard gate.
Whether she pees or not, take her from the backyard straight to the front (not through the house) on a 15 minute minumum walk (30 is better). If she pees/poos outside, SUPER PRAISE HER! GOOD, GOOD GIRL, U R THE BEST GIRL EVER! Then let her back in teh backyard.
Wait 5 minutes, and walk in your house. Walk outside, where she is, and don't dote on her. Kind of ignore her until she calms down (unless she potties out there (not on the steps) , then GOOD GIRL her).
She needs to have a way to tire herself out first, which will with the walk also give her "new" great places to sniff/mark/potty while getting her "nervous" energy out.
If she is a pound dog, she has not had an outlet for her extra energy. No one tired her out at the pound. She got attention from barking, being needy, or bad. (someone would come and clean her mess).
IF you catch her weeing inside, the minute you see it, say, "No, bad girl", pick her up, and carry her outside. If she goes out there "good girl" her. Or you can leave a leash on her when you are home, and if yu catch her, take the leash and lead her outside instead of pickiung her up.
IT takes a LOT of time but she will get it.
Just dont' yell at her, or punish her if you don't catch her IN THE ACT! Dogs don't understand punishment for somehting they did 2 minutes ago.
Just don't give up.
