Long haired cat owners?
I just adopted recently an abused and neglected long haired cat who looks like she has never seen a comb. She is extremely matted and I don't even know where to begin. I tried with scissors to get a few mats out but she jumped and until I go to PetSmart or somewhere to get safe or blunt edge scissors, I just don't feel safe using regular scissors on her. Can you give me any advice on where to start on a cat like this? The mats are just around her neckline. I've already got her feet, back and rear end and tail fine. They weren't too bad and she let me brush and comb them. It's just around the neckline and ears where the mats are so bad, but she basically sits except when I had scissors. Is there a way to do this with what is basically a well behaved cat?
Well, I'm not the most experianced with cats but I have volenteered at the Humain Socity a few times and they shave some of her fur off, because its quicker and there is less stress on the cat. If that dosn't work I can't help you further because as I said I'm not very experianced with cats.
I have a VERY long haired cat name fluffy! we bought him this special kind of brush, which you can buy anywhere( we got it at wal-mart;)), it has a slanted top and you just start brushing it up on its head and you just work your way down to its tail. this brush collects a lot of hair and gets the clumps of hair away. it gathers at the top and all you need to do once your done brushing is get the hair off the top of the brush and throw it away. i always bring treats with my while i am brushing him cuz then he sits nicely for me.. hope this helps!
I had an orange eyed Persian and he was very badly abused. he was so matted I tried the same thing by trying to cut his hair, but since his hair was so matted I came to close to his skin and cut him by mistake.

I really wanted him to trust me, and I didn't know what else to do, so I took him to the vet instead of the groomer, because a groomer is so much more noise, and other animals i didn't want him to be more nervous. I know this sounds mean but I had the vet completely shaved him he was that bad there was no choice.

he got use to me bringing him to the vet that would do it, and since he only needs it around his neck it shouldn't take no time at all.

I hope things work out for you I so understand what your talking about.
your a good owner.
