How to keep ants away from cat food outside?
Stupid question I'm sure but I feed a stray cat outside and have been for awhile. Most people will say "catch her and take her to a shelter and try and bring her inside." well the cat doesn't let me near her so yeah.

I started feeding her in the winter which wasn't a problem no ants. Its warmer out and ants infest the food bowl so I have to dump it constantly wasting food and I'm sure she's not eating but I don't want her eating ants.

it was suggested to spray ant spray on the ground then put the food bowl out but I wasn't sure that would be dangerous for the cat.
Put the food bowl in a cookie sheet and fill the cookie sheet with water.
I had this prob too. Get a larger dish and fill it with some water and then place your cat's food bowl inside it, ergo, those nasty ants can't get to the cat bowl. And good for you for feeding a stray.
I would recommend using granules of diazanine (sp?) it comes in a package and you sprinkle it - it's about the size of coarse sand. Sprinkle it around the base of your home, and around the base of the porch or steps or wherever you are feeding the cat.
I would avoid sprays, as they are too fine and can adhere to the cats paws. If the cat walks though the sprayed area and then licks it's paws it will get sick.
You can find this in the gardening section of most general merchandise stores (Eg Walmart, etc)

You could also try setting the dish inside another dish with water around it. (enough to make a "moat", not enough to over-flow into the dish) The ants would not be able to get to the food that way. Just make sure the outer dish is small enough that the cat can still reach the inner dish. :)

Good luck!

Oops! I see 2 others had the same idea and were just quicker! :)
What works for me is, i put the cat food in a bowl and then i use a little bit bigger bowl that i put water in. I set the cat food bowl in the bigger bowl that has water in it, and ants won't cross water to get to the cat food because they don't like to and/or they will drown. It works great for me. I hope this works.
