Problems with our Cat?
Our cat is 6 years old. The last 3 1/2 weeks we have noticed her peeing in the house, in random spots. She has never done this before. She's a really good cat. We took her to the vet to find out that she had a bad UTI. They put her on antibiotics for 2 weeks, and when we took her back, she still had the same amount of blood in her urine. So they put her on a new pill for two more weeks. She's lost almost 5 pounds in this time. The vet hasn't said that it could be anything else, but I'm kind of worried about her. Is there a possibility that she might have a type of cancer and her body is just shutting down? We've had to keep her down in the basement where theres no carpet. She will just sit in her liter box for hours and hours, which she never did before either. She used to eat quite a bit, and now she eats about 3/4 of a cup every 2-3 days. Anyone else have these problems?
Ok, if your cat lost 5 pounds in 3 weeks, it should be visibly ill. Did they do blood work? You need to take her back to have a more thorough work up done. This is not typical of a uti, and she is not doing better. Go back tomorrow, and don't leave without at least some idea of what is going on. Your cat needs you to do this.
er vet
My aunt just had similar problems with her cat. Hers is 13 years old though...the vet did testing and diagnosed it with diabetes. I would go back to the vet and demand some more thorough testing and answers because if she is not getting better, it is likely more than a UTI.

As the person below me said, do not put your cat down if the vet suggests it. We had a 3 month old kitten years ago that had respiratory problems and the vet suggested we put her down. We didnt do it and she lived to be 14...a long life, considering the vet said she didnt have a chance at the tender age of 3 months! 6 years is not old at all for a cat. I hope you can find out what is going on!
SOmething very similar happened to my mom's cat, but he was 18. Six is very young. The vet can't do anything???

I don't know what's wrong, but I must say this. I hope your cat is truly ok, but if the time ever comes, do not put any cat down if the vet suggests it. Let the cat just stay at home til it's time. They will appreciate it. DO not put it to sleep.

I hope she's ok though sorry if that was depressing!
Tanya I'm so glad you're taking her back to the vet. I've had cats with VERY resistant UTI's before (meaning they had to take multiple courses of antibiotics.) It IS possible that she's still recovering from this.
Your kitty's not eating well because she doesn't feel well. But five lbs. is an inordinate amount of weight to lose in such a short time.
It's possible she's in kidney failure, but that would be a rarity in such a young cat. Your vet will do bloodwork to determine what the cause of all this is; if he can't figure it out, please don't hesitate to get a second opinion.
And please let us know how this all works out. Best of luck to you and your beloved kitty.
a friend of mine has a cat about your cat's age and her cat is spraying in the house and she never did that before neither. She had to put the cat outside fulltime. The drs thought this was normal for her cat as she got older the cats will spray even if they've been fixed.
Can you lock her in a bathroom instead of the basement?

Her lack of eating MIGHT be depression. The other test to run is a blood panel for liver, kidney function & white blood cell count.

Has she been checked for stones or crystals in her bladder?

I would suggest also giving her CRANBERRY, the pills from the FEMALE section (not vitamin) section of the drug store, these are highest dosage & can help keep bacteria from clinging to the walls of the bladder.

Take her to a different vet for a second opinion. She has something more serious than just the routine uti that this vet is treating for. 3 weeks on antibiotics she should be improving, even if it's slight. Ask them for an ultrasound too, it's pricey, but it can detect a lot more internally than an xray, or other lab tests. And it's very rare, but have they checked for a blockage? Usually blocks happen in male cats, but has in females.

I hope you find the right treatment for her very soon.
6 years vet clinic
My cat has had UTI problems, usually treated with antibiotics in liquid form. Maybe you could ask for liquid? It is much easier to give the cat, and cats are good at spitting the pills out later. If you feel that the vet isn't doing all he can to make your cat better, get a second opinion. When my cat has had UTI's in the past, she didn't eat much either, so I warmed her food (so it smelled better) or gave her baby food (with no onion) and that seemed to help. Good luck, and I hope your kitty feels much better soon!
