Am I not feeding my cat enough?

Am I not feeding my cat enough?
He always acts like he's starving. He's 5 months old, and every morning he get 1/2 can of wet food, and the rest of the can in the evening. I've tried leaving out a thing of dry food for him to graze as he wishes, but he gobbles it up in about 5 minutes and then goes back to acting like he's starving.
My cat gets exactly the same. Do not feed him more. He is not starving, he's just an animal who would eat all day if he could. Keep doing what you're doing.
Every cat's needs are different.

Use your eyes & hands. Although cats are supposed to be sleek, you shouldn't be able to see their ribs- even if you were to get him wet.
You should have to apply just the slightest pressure to feel them.

I would ask the vet if his weight is appropriate for his size. If not he needs more food.
If he hasn't been wormed yet, ask them to do that while you're there.

I don't leave food out for my cats, either & I had several that thought they were starving.
I've made it a point to keep a growing container of cat (wheat) grass available for them to munch on & it helps. I get it at the produce store but I think many health food stores carry it, too.

Also, cats (like people) tend to want to eat more when they're bored. Especially with a yougster, it's important to make sure he has plenty of entertainment.

my cat eats only 1/2 can in morning and 1/2 can in evening. i leave hard food out at all times...not sure why your cat is constantly eating the hard food.
What breed? Cornish Rex are bottomless pits. My vet had one that gorged itself unconscious, they found it hiding in the food closet w/ mouth full of food. As they pried the loose kibbles out it came awake growling & chewing.

Kittens do need more food because they are growing, but if you are feeding according to directions on food packages, should be OK.

If you are feeding your cat at or above the recommended caloric intake then there could be a hormonal problem or deficiency.
Thus, you need to make a trip to the vet to figure out the problem. He may simply need a special type of diet.
Cats typically choose to eat small meals throughout the day so the dry food is a great idea. Maybe you are not leaving enough dry food for him try leaving a larger portion and then see if he leaves some for later. If this does not work then a talk with the vet would not hurt.
