How can i get my cockatiel to take a treat?
i just got him from a family member and he has been a little neglected. I'm trying to train him to not bite but he has no interest in treats ??? what do i do?
Sit close to him and ignore the bird. Don't look at the bird but make sure it can see you.
Pretend you're eating the treat and having a really good time, but keep quiet about it. The bird will start to get jealous.
After a little while you can casually leave the treat in the bars of the cage and just quietly leave. I bet the bird will be curious and have a little nibble. Eventually it'll realise that you supply some pretty tasty treats and come running to you when you have food.
Unfortunately my birds all know that I have the yummy food and I can't eat without being screeched at to share it.
Good luck.
Like you just said you just got him. He is in a new environment and most likely nervous. He doesn't know you guys at all. They don't instantly take to people or new things right away. You must give him time and patience. You have to earn his trust. This takes time and kindness. Just keep being nice to him and let him relax a little bit. He will soon come around when he is ready to.
