I have a beautiful yellow/green budgie that wont get on my finger. Ive had him for 3 months now and he is very settled in his cage. Everyday i put my hand in the cage. He allows me to put my hand up to him and he puts only ONE foot on my finger. Does anyone know how i can get him all the way onto my hand? I really want him out of his cage for some exercise!! HELP
I have two cockatiels and they don't get on my finger so I grab them out gently then place them on my finger. Also you have touch all your birds stuff then touch him, you have to do this at different times of the day at random everyday. Also if he's placing one foot on your hand press against him gently and that may work.
well your supposed to put your finger at its stomach and it should climb on. if it don't do that... hmmm... maybe try feeding it with the other hand, luring it upon your finger.... ( O=
He needs to get used to you. Apparently you've made some good progress there. It's possible that it's afraid of what you're wearing or what's outside the cage. Budgies can be afraid of the silliest thing: the shirt you're wearing, a hat, a grocery bag, etc. Try to see if it seems afraid of something on you or around the cage.
If there is nothing obvious scaring it, just force him to climb on your finger. You do that by presenting the finger in front of it, and by gently pressing your finger across its belly. As you press on the belly, it will naturally climb on your finger as if it were a little branch. It might try to bite first, to test the sturdiness. Don't take your finger away if that happens, so it trusts you.
Worst case: grab it and take it away from the cage for quality time. When they stay in their cages too long, they become territorial and they don't want to come out anymore. So, if the gentle approach does not work, you'll have to capture it (gently) and take it away from the cage for playtime.

try patting him on his belly gently and if that doesn't work then try whistling and patting his lower belly gently.
This is what I did.
I'd put one finger out and slide it slowly and gently under the budgies foot, then I'd do the same with the other foot. They will catch on, and when they do, raise your hand up and slowly move your hand out of the cage. Keep doing this until he gets the hang of it. Also... his wings need to be clipped if you want him to be out, or else he is going to fly all around and hurt himself. Turn off all ceiling fans.
Pet the budgies feet gently aswell and stroke it lightly, giving it reassurance you're a nice owner and that you love them and not a meanie. >:D

yeah i have a budgie and he didn't step up on my finger for AGES more that 3 months!! he does now though. the whole pressing your finger against his chest is right ...that's what i did. then when he steps up make sure u use the command "step up" then every time you want him to step up you just say it and he will naturally step up. also if you stand at the other end of the room and put your finger out, tap it then say step up...he will [at least my budgie does that]
wached it on harrys practis. and im a 13 year old budgie owner!!
Ok, before i tell you what to do, i got something random.
It's quite cute if it puts one foot up. (:
Back to the point.
#1 Firstly, slowly bring your hand towards the budgie. Make sure it is visible for it, budgies hate things creeping up them.
#2 If it does not step up, thrust your finger lightly towards it's chest. When your finger touches it's chest, it should automatically step up.
If it still does not work, try again. Because it is a natural reaction for a budgie to stand on something touching it's chest.
Good luck! :]
