Which is more intelligent: A crow or parrot?
If so, why do pirates usually have parrots on their shoulder to get advise?
There's really no way to know.

First you have to define intelligence. Then you have to decide what kind of parrot you're talking about - there are over 300 kinds and some are brighter than others - and which member of the crow family.

African Greys have so far demonstrated the highest degree of language comprehension (some crows can talk, too), while crows have demonstrated greater tool use (which some parrots also do). Keas are a more crowlike parrot - see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzvonkpwO...

And you've misconstrued the relationship between Pirates and Parrots. Shoulders are a dominance position; the parrot is in charge. (Some pirates actually did have parrots, though. Parrots were common pets in Central America and the Caribbean islands. Most crows eat carrion; seeing them eat the bodies of your fallen comrades would make them less popular among pirates. Also, Europeans were used to crows - they weren't "exotic" like parrots were)
Probably a crow- check out youtube, there are a lot of interesting crow studies, including them making tools and hooks out of wire. And parrots- some are not so intelligent, and others are extremely intelligent.

I do not know if pirates actually had parrots on their shoulders, or if it was a made up thing in books and movies that just caught on.

If it is true, there most likely weren't crows where pirates lived. Closer to the coast, there would be parrots.
Having had both parrots and a pet crow I'm going to say it's pretty close . I would give a slight edge to the crow only because it came right from the wild and still had all it's natural ,wild instincts. My description would be----They're all the same . They just have different feathers so you can tell them apart. Very similar but different if that makes any sense.
The crow is said to be more intelligent than the parrot. The raven is said to be more intelligent than a crow.

Perhaps the colour of crows didn't appeal to pirates. Perhaps they took no notice of them. Perhaps they didn't see them as being intelligent at the time.
I would have to vote for the crow too. All Corvids are very clever. Wikipedia agrees...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corvidae
I dont care what anybody or try to get around it.IT IS A CROW.
