Chicken questions pleas help!!?
First how big of a coop do you need for 12 chickens?
Is it better to let them free rang or be in a run that you can move?
How much room would you need for the run?
We have 12 chicks of 5 different kinds all large breed any care tips?
Also we only know that 4 are female how can we tell if the others are?
The for are from a feed store. We are not aloud to have roosters here.
How high can they fly? We have a 5 foot fence is that going to be high enough? I also got a bantam it beak dosn't close right the sides do not meet it also seems to have some trouble breathing some times it is a month old. Do you think that it will be able to make it? I just got it yesterday. The breeds I have are 2 RIR, 3 RIR Maran mix, 2 black sex-linked,1 White rock, and 4 Ameraucana's if that helps.
O my mom got two Silkies any tips on care for them one just hatched yesterday we got them and the Ameraucana's and the White rock from the same people. The silkies and the bantam will be housed in my (old) rabbit pin that I made it is 6ft by 3ft that will be enough right?
I also need some thoughts on nest boxes!
Thanks!
Ok, I used to raise a lot of chickens. First off, make sure the run is about the same size as your coop. I used an old calf hut for my coop, It worked great. I used calf panels to make the fence for the run, and wrapped the bottom 4 or 5 feet of it in chicken wire. the easiest way to tell if they are male or female is to wait until they get bigger, you will notice the male chickens have a horn on the back of their feet. Like a claw. I would suggest clipping the birds wings to they will not be able to fly very high if at all. That is the safest bet to make sure that your chickens don't get outside of the pen and they don't get attacked by predators.
The Silkies will be a little more territorial, keep your eye on them and make sure they don't fight with the others. also the rhode island reds can get a temper.
if the white rock is a cornish rock, then just keep an eye on them. they tend to get mean towards a month old.

good Luck!
i dont raise chickens i eat chickens. i suck theire bloooddd
well we have 5 chickens and had about 25 and our chicken coop is actually big so i suggest this for 12 chickens, our coop is about a 20m on 18 with a sleeping cage of 3meters on 1.5m and 1.8m high so for 12 chickens id suggest about a 25m on 20 with a cage with 4-5 nests and about a 5m long on 3m with a height of 1.8m also make 75% of your coop grass and the other 25% plant a big tree with lots of shadow where there is between sand and earth there, and plant bamboo where they can walk in, why my chickens are always there in there made little holes where they relax in the shadow against the heat.

hope this helps.
